Internships
The Democratic staff for the Committee on Energy and Commerce offers high school, college, graduate, and post-graduate internships. These programs are intended to provide students with the opportunity to view the legislative process in action.
The primary responsibility of high school and college interns is to assist in the daily operations of the Committee, including answering phones, sorting mail, data entry, conducting research, and performing other administrative tasks. Graduate and post-graduate interns will assist the Committee in conducting background research, drafting memoranda, preparing materials for Committee proceedings, attending meetings, and organizing and reviewing documents. Interns will also be given the opportunity to interact and learn from Committee staff through a series of educational lunch programs and other activities.
The Committee is comprised of six subcommittees: Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade; Communications and Technology; Energy and Power; Environment and the Economy; Health; and Oversight and Investigations. The specific tasks and focus areas assigned to each intern will depend on the need of the Committee at the time of the internship.
College, graduate, and post-graduate internships are unpaid and generally last from 8 to 10 weeks. High school internships are also unpaid and generally last from 2 to 4 weeks. Specialized knowledge of issues under the Committee’s jurisdiction is preferred, but not required.
