Rep. Waxman Statement on the American Lung Association Report on State of Tobacco Control

Jan 16, 2013

Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman released the following statement in response to a new report released by the American Lung Association on the progress of federal and state tobacco control policies:

“Today's report from the American Lung Association underscores what we have known for some time:  the tobacco industry is unyielding in its goal to get kids hooked on, and to keep current smokers addicted to, their products.

“In exploiting regulatory and tax loopholes, the industry has succeeded in increasing the use of cheaper and unregulated products such as small cigars, pipe tobacco, and novel products (including e-cigarettes and dissolvable strips).  We have come to expect such tactics from tobacco manufacturers.

“Unfortunately, today's report also shows that delay in forceful regulatory action is making their work easier.  The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act -- a bipartisan effort -- provides the Food and Drug Administration with the authority to respond to emerging public health threats and keep these deadly products away from our children.  To date, however, the agency has failed to take full advantage of this law.  I urge the FDA to use its regulatory power to put a stop to the tobacco industry's latest campaign.”
