Rep. Waxman Statement on FCC Proposal to Lower Prison Phone Rates

Dec 28, 2012

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman released the following statement on the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) announcement that it will propose rules to lower prison phone rates:

"The FCC has taken an important step towards reducing exorbitant prison phone rates that prevent families from staying connected to their incarcerated loved ones. My colleague Rep. Bobby Rush has been championing this cause for a very long time and I was pleased to join with him earlier this year to call on the FCC to take action on prison phone rates.

"The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking released by the FCC today is a welcome sign of progress for the families of the incarcerated who have been waiting nearly a decade for relief.

"I thank all the Commissioners for their unanimous, bipartisan support for the NPRM, and in particular Commissioner Clyburn for her tireless advocacy on this issue and Chairman Genachowski for bringing this item to a vote. I encourage the FCC to build on today's momentum and see this proceeding through to the finish."
