Ranking Member Waxman and Energy and Commerce Democrats Introduce Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2014
Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman was joined yesterday by eight Energy and Commerce Committee Democrats in introducing H.R. 4364, the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2014, following the Committee’s hearing with GM CEO Mary Barra on the GM recalls. The legislation will increase transparency and accountability for auto manufacturers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), raise NHTSA funding, and increase the amount of maximum civil penalties for violations of federal safety standards.
“In the course of our Committee’s investigation on the GM recall, we have found that GM knew about these problems for over a decade yet did nothing,” said Rep. Waxman. “I hope the Committee takes up this bill quickly. On behalf of the victims and families who were hurt by this tragedy, we must improve the law to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring again.”
Original co-sponsors of the bill introduced by Rep. Waxman include: Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr., Rep. Bobby L. Rush, Rep. Diana DeGette, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. Doris Matsui, Rep. Donna Christensen, Rep. Bruce Braley, and Rep. Paul D. Tonko.
